Trauma 

 

Trauma is "a destabilizing event that evokes physical, psychological and emotional distress" [1]

  • Trauma can be the result of :

    • Wars

    • Nautral Disasters

    • Torture

    • Physical abuse

    • Sexual abuse

    • Emotional abuse

    • Sudden life-changing events 

    • Etc.

  • Psychological disorders people may develop in response to trauma 

    • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder 

    • Chronic stress

    • Depression 

    • Anxiety 

    • Etc.

  • Trauma has a lasting impact on survivors lives, " trauma challenges and alters people's beliefs about the world, their benevolence, significance and worthiness and damages their ability to trust themesleves and the environment" [2]

 

Trauma and Children 

  • Traumatic Events are very difficult for children due to their lack of maturity.

  • "By nature of their developmental status, children lack the cognitive, emotional, physical, and spiritual (or meaning-making) skills necessary to cope with overwhelming experiences" [3]

  • Sexual Abuse is one of the most common traumatic events [4]

  • People that experienced sexual abuse in their childhood are often struggle to cope with it [5]

  • Child Abuse is another common trauma faced in childhood. 

  • Some long terms affects of child abuse include, " fear, anxiety, depression, anger, hostility, inappropriate sexual behavior, poor self esteem, tendency towards substance abuse and difficulty with close relationships" [6]
